The “Toys of the ‘50s, ’60s, and ’70s” traveling exhibition captures the joy of play and the pure fun of being a kid. Regardless of age, each decade represents rich veins of nostalgia, memory, and history. These toys—and the stories of the kids, parents, child-rearing experts, inventors, manufacturers, psychologists and the promoting advertisers —reflect the dynamism of American life during this thematic timeframe.

Maple & Associates, LLC was asked to assist in developing the TOYs exhibit by the Minnesota Historical Society. Because of the exhibits’ focus on specific decade division, a theme for each area needed to be created. All thematic treatments were playful and a bit over-the-top. Period color and decor created fanciful interiors for each grouping including an oversized period television with an AV program that cycles through toy commercials of the day.

The TOYs exhibit traveled to several other venues across the U.S. where it needed to be reconfigured to custom fit the access and unique attributes of each gallery. M&A provided detailed layouts, setup drawings and onsite consulting for each new state TOYs visited. Universal visitor smiles confirmed the uplifting and enchanted environment both young and old encountered when they entered this fanciful exhibition!
